Smooth Move

The other morning I got up at the crack of dawn to continue painting the house before I went to work.  So I painted the rest of one color and got the paint and new paint pan out and ready for the next color.  I hadn’t eaten yet and was starting to get really hungry, so I decided to take a break and get something to eat.  Each morning I make a smoothie then pour it into a bowl and add a little granola.  So, I made my smoothie . . . then poured it right into the paint pan.  Okay, so I can be a little bit crazy at times.

Sometimes when you’re not thinking straight and you or one of your children do something crazy, like pour your smoothie into a paint pan, it may be because you or they are not seeing quite clearly.  It may be time to get your eyes checked.

Did you know that

  • 80 percent of learning comes through the eyes,
  • one out of every four children need vision correction, and
  • poor vision often goes undetected, even being missed by the school screenings?

One of our adult patients came in because her eyesight wasn’t what it once was.  At the end of the eye exam, her daughter, who was in grade school, indicated that she couldn’t read the eye chart clearly even though she was about twice as close to it.  Her mother didn’t believe her because she always passed the eye check at school and seemed to be doing fine.  Dr. Miner told her to hop up in the chair, and he checked her eyes.  Sure enough . . . she needed glasses!  And she needed a fairly powerful prescription.

Unfortunately, this story is not uncommon.

Make that important move and get your and your children’s eyes checked to aid in the learning process.  It may not eliminate your crazy moments, but it could reduce them.

Pain in the Neck

I have always been the I-will-do-it-myself kind of person.  I always painted my house; I shingled my roof; and I added onto my house with the help of my father.  So when the front yard project started, my husband said that he wanted to do the work himself.  As time went on I knew I wanted to hire it out.  Thanks to a neighbor, we were able to find someone to do the pavers for less than it would have cost us to install them ourselves, not to mention having less stress.  Besides, where would we find the time?

Then it was time for the artificial grass, and I knew I didn’t want to install that.   Although we could do it for less than to hire it done, we decided to pay to hire that out as well.  I was never so happy.

The pavers would have taken me forever and wouldn’t have looked as good in the end.  The grass was done perfectly because they knew what they were doing.  The stress level for me went way, way down.

Oftentimes we don’t want to pay for something we think we can get by without.  However, if we will bite the bullet and pay the price, we might find that it is not only worth it but our stress is so much lower.  Office lenses—or you could call them computer lenses—could just be the thing you need to lessen your stress . . . especially on your eyes, neck and back.  Do you find yourself tilting your head back trying to find that sweet spot on the computer?  If so, I’m sure you’re familiar with the neck stress and strain that accompanies it (not to mention that you suddenly feel 20 years older than you really are).

You may be asking yourself, “What are office lenses?”  Well, they’re a separate pair of glasses designed for computer use.  Imagine that when you naturally look at your computer monitor, everything is in focus.  Then when you look at the papers or book on your desk (looking out a little lower in the frame), that’s in focus as well.  Since it is a type of “progressive lens” (meaning the prescription progressively changes from the top to the bottom of the lens), you get all of this without lines!

Get ride of the pain in the neck, and experience office lenses.

A Fresh, New Look

We have started repainting our house.  Usually we paint it the previous color, but this time we’ve chosen new colors.  It is a process, but I always love the feel of fresh paint.  Most of all I love seeing the house changing with a fresh new look.  It feels like new life is coming into me as well as into the house.  It’s a fresh start—a chance to live life freely.

I have the privilege of witnessing the same renewal of life in our patients when they buy new glasses.

When one receives a new prescription for glasses, they can choose to get new lenses in their old frames, and boy is that great.  They can see much clearer!   But when you get new frames with your lenses, it can feel as if life is coming back to you again.  It’s a fresh start—a chance to live life freely.

One of our patients shares this story:

“My husband knew he needed new glasses because his eyesight was getting worse.  The frames he had before were very outdated.  He started looking at frames at another optical store.  When he was trying some of them on, he actually looked frightening. (Not just in a style sort of way—I actually became afraid of him . . . my heart started racing, and I got a fight or flight sensation.)  I suggested he try somewhere else.

“So we came to Elite Optical, and one of your staff, Michelle, helped him choose glasses that were not only stylish, up to date, and made him look very handsome but ones that made me view him as the kind man that he is.  Thank you for uncovering my fresh, new husband.”

Another Man's Treasure

In doing the demolition on my front yard, there was one thing I didn’t think about … all the things I was removing form the front yard—the rocks, the fill dirt, and the used brick.  I now had a huge pile of it.  So I decided to put it on Craig’s list to help those who could use them to help improve their yards.

Now, there is a story I would like to share.  My son was driving to his house the other evening and saw a truck driving down the street with a trailer on it.  The trailer was full of river rocks with sand bags around the edges to keep the rocks contained.  He thought to himself, “They should go to my parents’ house and get some more rocks.”  Little did he know that I had posted the rocks on Craig’s list for free and that is where those rocks came from.

Just as I took something I couldn’t use and gave it to someone who could, Elite Optical collects used glasses and gives them to the Lion’s Club, which has a wonderful program wherein they distribute used glasses to those in need.

All we needed to do to give our old landscaping materials to someone who could use them was to place an ad on Craig’s list and answer a couple of phone calls.  Bringing your used prescription eyeglasses into Elite Optical is even easier than that.

Help others enjoy the gift of sight.

In Your Own Backyard

I called the company I found that had the pavers I wanted for my landscaping project, and it was clear on the other side of the valley.  By the time I added in shipping, the price was getting up higher; however, it was still quite a bit less than had I purchased them at the major home improvement stores.  When I raised this concern, they told me that they supply pavers to a business in Mesa that just happened to be across the street from my office.  I checked it out, and the price was even a little less for the pavers.  The customer service was great, and the shipping was a fraction of the cost—not to mention the time I saved when I went to check out the product I was getting.  Also, I was happy to spend my money here in our city and help my own community.

People oftentimes feel they need to go to Scottsdale for the latest style, for the newest look in glasses, or for the great customer service.  Elite Optical has brought all of that and much more to the city of Mesa.  Come check us out—you won’t be disappointed.  We are the first optical in Mesa to carry Oliver Peoples.  You no longer have to go to Scottsdale to get it anymore.  The price could be better, and the time you would save is priceless—not only that, but you are keeping money here in your own town of Mesa.

The Price is Right

The next thing I needed to do for my landscaping project was to find pavers for my walkway and porch.  I went to two big commercial stores that I often go to in search for my supplies.  I found a style of pavers I liked quite a bit; however, the price seemed really high.  I decided to get online and see what I could find.  Surely, in this big metropolitan area I could find what I wanted—and at a good price.  I started the search and found what I wanted, and the price was less than half the cost of the major stores.  Wow, was I excited!

Oftentimes we think that going to the big retail stores or even online discount stores will cost us less.  However, that is not always the case.  When you compare apples to apples—or maybe I should say frames to frames, lenses to lenses, or contacts to contacts—you may be surprised to know that at Elite you could very well be paying less and getting the personalized attention that you deserve.

One Step Back, Two Steps Forward

In the face lift of our front yard (discussed in previous blog) the rocks are moved, the dirt dug out ready for the paver sidewalk, the old patio broken down and mostly removed, and the old planter walls torn down.  My team had quit working for the night when my youngest daughter came home and made a derogatory comment about how unattractive our front yard looked with rock and dirt all over the place.  However, not only is it too late to go back, but it is time to go forward.  Going forward oftentimes means I have to go through the demolition process in order to get the end results that we want.  I know it’s worth the hassle even though I can’t get to my car without going through this mess.

So what does one step back, two steps forward look like to you?  Are you really seeing clearly now?  You may not have to go through the demolition process to get the vision you desire. Perhaps setting up and attending an eye appointment could be seen as a nuisance.  However, seeing Dr. Miner is never a demolition process.  People love him and find him personable and truly interested in them as individuals.  He loves working with people and educating them about the possibilities that are theirs to have.

Some may say getting progressives may be a demolition process.  But with the newest progressive lenses with a wide intermediate and wide reading, it doesn’t have to be that way. I have a sister who was wearing trifocals and continually complained about not being able to see things at the angle in which she wished to view them.  We explained to her many times over the years the benefits of progressive lenses.  When she finally agreed to take our advice, she had a day or two of adjustment (demolition phase) and now has enjoyed years of great vision.  She continually thanks us for encouraging her to take that step. We would love to help you get the best vision for all your lifestyle needs without going through, or at least minimizing, the demolition process.

Getting a Face Lift

For several years now I have wanted to give my house a face lift.  But wait…isn’t this website about eyes, visions and glasses? Yes….I’m getting to that point. Hang in there with me just one moment. The color on our trim is very outdated, we’ve had a bridge with a river running under it since we bought the house over 20 years ago, and we weren’t happy with the front porch or the planter.  We were going to keep things fairly simple and change just a couple of things that were of the most concern. Afer hiring my son and another friend to help with the project, finding the perfect pavers at a really good price and finding grass that both my husband and I were happy with, we discovered that the best price and value was to overhaul the entire font yard instead of just one or two items now…and then more down the road.  So, I dove in and am gettin’ it done.  Although I am spending more and doing more than I first anticipated, the overall value of the changes far outweighs doing just the minimum

So it is with glasses. Perhaps you visit the optometrist just to improve your eyesight.  There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, and we commend you on being proactive with your eyesight.  You may choose to use your old frames, which is alright; but how will you feel in the end?  Is that your vision?  However, you may want a face lift yourself…a new, updated look.  Perhaps you know exactly what you want.  We can produce that vision for you. Perhaps you’re like many of our patients that aren’t quite sure what they’d like. With their amazing sense of style and ability to bring out your true personality, our trained opticians can help you select frames that enhance your natural beauty or good looks (for you guys out there). We also educate you about the different features of different glasses (such as progressives, office lenses, sports glasses, and sunglasses) and lenses to fit your lifestyle needs. Did you know that when you purchase more than one set of glasses at a time, the price goes down?  Also, when you purchase on the day of the exam, the price for purchasing multiple pairs goes down even more.  Why not get what you have always dreamed of getting?  You will be happier in the end.

UV Rays in Mesa, AZ

Another beautiful summer is upon us once again here in bright and sunny Mesa, AZ! As we experience those ever-present UV rays that can do so much damage to our skin, isn't it interesting how we worry so much about protecting our tender skin but often neglect to protect one of our most valuable senses--our eyes?

I had a very dear friend that I would do most anything for who lost a lot of her eyesight at an earlier-than-average age.  My heart would ache on days when I would go to visit her and she would struggle to see my face clearly enough to know who I was just by sight.

She would say to me, "I can't even see your eyes. All that I see is a shadow outline of your face."  How sad is that?  My heart would go out to her as that was one thing with which I was powerless to help.

Now, I know for myself that I want to keep my eyesight clear and protected even as I grow older.  UV protection is so important, not only for our skin but even more so for our eyes.  It is essential that whatever eye protection one uses has that vital protection from the damaging UV rays that cause so much harm over time.
